Q&A

Welcome Owen to the Firemind team! It’s lovely to have you with us. For our website viewers, could you please tell us a little about yourself and your background?

Hi! It’s great to be here! I’m Owen, 23 years old and from Buckinghamshire (just north west of London). I recently completed my studies at Hartpury University. I’ve spent some time in the US after University, working as a sailing instructor, and now back in the UK, this is my first full-time role so it’s all very exciting.

How did you find out about us, and what made you decide to apply for a role with Firemind?

I came across Firemind when I was offered some work experience for a few days (with no real expectation from myself for a job offer). To my surprise, I got a message from Dan White, the CCO, a couple of weeks later, asking if I wanted to do a trial week with the sales team in London. And the rest is now history!

What it your role at Firemind?

My role at Firemind will be that of an Account Associate. Meaning, I’m currently focusing on understanding the business, going through the onboarding and training and building a foundation of product and solution knowledge surrounding Firemind. After that, I’ll be focusing on customer generation and business development.

Which areas of our business interested you the most?

Growing up with my dad working within the tech industry, I’ve always been able to speak to him and question him about new developments and interesting IT topics. But when he brought up the idea of Generative AI, to me it immediately captured my imagination, and it’s been fascinating learning more about it.

What will be your main goals/objectives whilst working at Firemind?

My main goal at the moment is to soak up as much knowledge as I can from the guys I’m working alongside here in the London office. They are all at the top of their game, with loads of experience, so they’re a really valuable resource for me as I start to make my way in this exciting role.

We know you haven’t been here long, but what are some highlights of the job so far?

One of the main highlights for me has to be, just how welcoming and supportive everyone has been! I really get the feeling that I’m being set up for success here, and that is reflected in the work that everyone does at Firemind. You can really sense the pride and passion that is put into the projects we take on.

Which aspects of your role are you most excited about?

I knew coming out of University that I wanted to take on a job that had customer facing elements, and I think I’ve come to the right place! I’m really excited to talk to customers about how Firemind can help them elevate their data journey.

Outside of work, what do you get up to? Tell us about your hobbies.

In terms of hobbies, Rugby has always been one of my greatest passions. I started playing when I was 5 years old, and I’ve been hooked ever since! I’ve been really fortunate with the opportunities it’s presented me, including the opportunity to represent Hartpury University in their academy, which came with some of the most successful moments of my playing career. I am also a keen sailor, having taken up the hobby at a young age. Over the past two years it’s taken me to the US where I’ve been lucky enough to work as an instructor in the beautiful state of Maine, inspiring the next generation of kids to take up the sport.

What’s your favourite song on your playlist right now?

A song that I keep going back to on my playlist at the moment is Feather by Nujabes.

Any fun nicknames we should know about? If Yes, what’s the backstory?

A bit of a boring one unfortunately. I’ve always been known as ‘Pottsy’ through Rugby. I think the backstory is fairly self explanatory, being that Potts is my last name. 😆

If you could only chose one dish to eat, every meal, for the rest of your life, what would it be?

The one dish I would eat for the rest of my life would have to be a sirloin steak, done medium rare, with a side of chips and salad.

What is at the top of your bucket list?

I’ve never given it much thought until now, but I think it would have to be going to see Machu Picchu. It’s a great mixture of adventure and incredible history, with some pretty nice views to go with it!

What is one skill you would really love to learn?

I would love to learn how to cook properly. When I was at University, I never really pushed myself to experiment with more complex dishes, so I think that’s something for me to really throw myself into (and it’s a great skill for life as well).

How do you wind down after work?

I’m a very social person, so I really enjoy catching up with friends and family. But if my social battery is drained, then it’s always good to relax and watch some sport or a movie. A top movie for me right now would have to be Guy Ritchie’s ‘The Gentlemen‘.
